In recognition of Literary Month at the Scarab Club, our featured beam signer of the month is poet Edgar Guest. Affectionately nicknamed “the poet of the people,” Edgar Guest (1881-1959) achieved national fame during the early 20th century for his poetry. Through his poem-a-day columns in the Detroit Free Press and NBC radio broadcasts, Guest reached a large audience with his sentimental view of everyday family life. In 1952, Guest became Michigan’s first and only poet laureate. (Courtesy of the Scarab Club Archives.)
