Since the early 20^th century, the Scarab Club has hosted a members-only Gold Medal Exhibition.  The Gold Medal is the club’s highest and most esteemed annual award.  The exhibition typically occurs in the Fall and the medal is awarded at an annual member dinner in December.

Medals were awarded at the Annual Exhibition of Michigan Artists at the Detroit Institute of Arts from 1917 to 1939/40.  Beginning in 1940 Gold Medals were only awarded at Scarab Club Gold Medal Exhibition although monetary prizes for the Scarab Club Award were still given at the Annual Exhibition of Michigan Artists.
