In partnership with the Detroit Society of Women Painters and Sculptors
This exhibit invites women and people presenting as women to reflect on the universal yet deeply personal nature of emotions, showcasing how different backgrounds influence the way we process feelings like joy, sorrow, anger, love, and fear.
Emotions Unbound aims to break down societal boundaries and stigmas around emotional expression, encouraging a deeper understanding of how emotions connect us across differences and define our individual and collective experiences.
All media welcome.
This exhibit is in partnership with Detroit Society of Women Painters and Sculptors.
Who is the Juror?
Carole Morisseau is a Detroit-based visual artist and educator whose practice includes painting, drawing, sculpture, and mixed-media installation. Grounded in traditional techniques and strong figurative imagery, her work explores African American history, identity, spirituality, resilience, social justice, and the connections between cultures and generations.
A retired Detroit Public Schools art teacher and former adjunct faculty member at Wayne State University, Morisseau earned a Bachelor of Science in Art Education from Central State University and pursued additional study at several institutions, including the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
In 2018, she received a Fulbright-Hays Fellowship to study Afro-Brazilian art and culture in Brazil. That experience helped shape Healing Wall, an interactive installation incorporating Afro Brazilian and African American culture and reflecting on healing, memory and the African diaspora. Morisseau has exhibited locally, nationally, and internationally, including the Fulbright 75th Anniversary International Exhibition. Her work appears in public and private collections, including Henry Ford Health and the University of Detroit Mercy. Her honors include Best in Show at Detroit Artists Market and recognition as an Outstanding African American Artist.
In 2025, she was named the Scarab Club’s Inaugural Artist-in-Residence, serving through 2027 and continuing a career devoted to artistic excellence, education, and Detroit’s cultural community.
